This oval teak tub looks just like a wine barrel but a little more luxe. The elongated design makes it extra comfortable; this tub could even host more than one bather at a time.

Some desks are just larger and wider versions of a night table. The flat surface of a desk can house a lamp books and other nighttime necessities. If you have enough space add a chair to create a dual-duty nightstand that also serves as a workspace. Tip: If your bed is placed in the middle of the wall and you add a desk on one side be sure to put another piece of furniture that's at least the height of the mattress on the other side. And use lamps of the same height — they don't need to be the same style — on both pieces of furniture. These things will prevent the room from looking too furniture-heavy on one side.

Wooden bathtubs usually made from waterproofed marine wood add unexpected warmth to tile and stone bathrooms. This rectangular tub works well with an Asian-influenced design but I love that it can feel classic too.

Cool blues. A navy blue wall color adds a bit of drama to the room while helping to frame the fetching views. A softer blue hue on the ceiling mimics the sky giving the room an even more expansive vibe than it already has. A cool white color for the trim adds a clean crisp linear element. This is a decidedly cool color palette so it's best for bedrooms in hot and sunny locations.

Floating shelf. If your bedside space is challenging or if you prefer a minimalist style try a floating shelf as your night-table alternative. The designs of floating shelves today go beyond the simple white or wood rectangles we've come to know. Stylish shelves can be found in glossy hues and a variety of shapes and can also feature useful storage options. Shelves flanking the sides of the bed often appear built-in and look best when they are the same size and style. Look for a shelf wide or deep enough to hold a small bedside lamp and book and hang it at the same height as the top of your mattress. Tip: Attach the shelf to the wall with anchors and screws that can hold 40 pounds or at least the load that your shelf instructions recommend. Be sure that the combined weight of your bedside items is less than the shelf's maximum load.

Feature wall. Most of the previous solutions are optimal in bathrooms lacking in wall space. If you do have a free surface you could easily incorporate your towel racks as part of a feature wall. Here a wood-paneled alcove features five towel bars that the bather can easily reach from the tub.

Tropical hue. Deep watery blue hues are among my favorites for a bedroom. The slight green undertones give a bit of warmth that a true blue lacks. It's also a nice choice if you happen to associate the color with a vacation spent someplace warm lush and tropical. For the ceiling I went with a crisp and light greenish-gray and the trim color is a slightly cool off-white.

A console table is a versatile piece of furniture that can be useful in many rooms of the house. It's slim in profile and airy in design and can provide a small drawer for storage of personal items. In the bedroom a console table can pull double duty as a nightstand and desk or a nightstand and vanity thanks to the open space that allows you to place a stool ottoman or chair underneath. Console tables seen here frame a bed nicely when the same or similar style is placed on either side of the bed. Tip: If you aren't pairing matching tables be sure the other night table is at least the height of the bed and of a similar width as the console table.
