Serene in green. If you like the idea of a bold ceiling color but find that orange is a bit too zesty for you try a more soothing hue such as green. This green is still vibrant but because it picks up on the natural verdant hues out the window it isn't quite as punchy as the previous palette. A super soft sage green on the wall bridges the ceiling color and the pure white trim nicely.

Create a peaceful atmosphere. What would a peaceful bedroom look and feel like to you? Consider whether there's a certain color (like vivid turquoise) or object (like a vase of fresh flowers) that really brings to mind the mood you want to create. Only bring in objects with the intention of cultivating peaceful restorative feelings. Take action: Take some time to sit quietly in your refreshed space and list the colors objects and activities you'd like to invite more of into your room. Pick one item on your list and take a step toward making it a reality. For example if you'd like to paint your bedroom a more soothing hue take a trip to the paint store to pick up swatches. If you'd like to incorporate meditation into your nightly routine create a quiet corner with cushions where you can practice.

Bookshelves are stalwart storage options for so much more than novels and nonfiction. If you have enough space on one side of your bed try placing a bookshelf against the bed wall. It can house books (of course) as well as decorative boxes for storing personal items like those earplugs and eye masks. If it has an open back or a hole for threading out a cord then the shelf can store a small reading lamp too. If your bedroom door is in a corner of the bedroom as is quite common the bookcase will probably look best placed in the corner farthest from the door. This placement will make the room appear more balanced upon entry. This rule doesn't apply if your door is in the middle of the room. Tip: Keep your bookshelf neat and styled by mixing books with decorative items. Try color coordinating the spines of the books and alternating their placement from horizontal to vertical. Both strategies will help create an intentionally designed look.

Embrace your whimsical side and opt for a chair as your night table. This look works particularly well when just one side of a bed has room for a nightstand β€” though it also looks adorable when you double up with chairs on both sides of the bed. Tip: For added interest select a chair that has a different texture from the other textiles in the room. For instance you might choose velvet against silk. It's also fun to choose a color that is different from but coordinates with the other colors in the room as in this bedroom. Add a hard tray or book on top of the seat of your chair to create a sturdy surface for your bedside knickknacks.

Color pops. Liven up a plain bedroom with an accent wall covered in fabulously bold wallpaper. For the truly fearless choose a contrasting color (like the yellow here against the peacock blue wall) for the bedside tables and cushions. If you prefer to limit your pop to one place choose a white or wood headboard and tables and layer on neutral (but deliciously textured) bedding.

Reframe clearing clutter in a positive light. It's all too easy to let the bedroom become a dumping ground for all the random items that don't seem to fit anywhere else. So the first step in clearing clutter is to consider what you do want in the bedroom. Fresh sheets good lighting your current book on the nightstand? Definitely. Piles of paper children's toys and the vacuum cleaner? Probably not. Take action: Center yourself by taking a few deep calming breaths before you begin. Then start sorting through items in your bedroom piece by piece choosing those you want to keep there and removing everything else. Don't worry right now about where the unwanted items will go β€” separating out this part of the process can make decision-making much easier.

Calm the visual noise. Ideally the bedroom would be solely devoted to rest and relaxation but if you live in a smaller space this simply may not be possible. If you must make room for your desk in the bedroom aim for a setup that allows you to hide everything away when you're done working. Tuck work-related items into drawers and cabinets leaving surfaces as clean and clear as possible for a restful feeling. Take action: Remove anything that reminds you of work bills or to-dos from within visual range of your bed. If you can find a place to store these items in a different room do so. If not clear out a drawer or shelf in a closed cabinet to keep them out of view.

Floating shelf. If your bedside space is challenging or if you prefer a minimalist style try a floating shelf as your night-table alternative. The designs of floating shelves today go beyond the simple white or wood rectangles we've come to know. Stylish shelves can be found in glossy hues and a variety of shapes and can also feature useful storage options. Shelves flanking the sides of the bed often appear built-in and look best when they are the same size and style. Look for a shelf wide or deep enough to hold a small bedside lamp and book and hang it at the same height as the top of your mattress. Tip: Attach the shelf to the wall with anchors and screws that can hold 40 pounds or at least the load that your shelf instructions recommend. Be sure that the combined weight of your bedside items is less than the shelf's maximum load.
